Capsule sponge test pilot study

We are excited to work with the Royal Free Gastroenterology team participating in the Capsule-sponge service pilot study set up by National Health Service England. The test offers a non-endoscopic diagnostic for early oesophageal cancer and the pre-cancerous condition, Barrett’s oesophagus and can be used as a proactive case finding tool. Oesophageal cancer is the 7th most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with many diagnosed at a late stage, with poor survival rates. Early diagnosis enables much better outcomes. The test consists of a “capsule-sponge” device that is swallowed in the form of a capsule, expands into a sponge in the stomach, and upon retrieval via a string, collects oesophageal cells. These cells can be analysed for signs of inflammation or early cancer. We will be running searches to identify those at higher risk and inviting those patients to participate. The most common first symptom of oesophageal cancer is difficulty swallowing, often feeling like food is stuck. Other early signs can include persistent heartburn or indigestion, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, a chronic cough, or hoarseness.

HGP Skin lesion clinic

We have been working with Dr Meena Arunachalam, Consultant Dermatologist at the Royal Free Hospital, running a monthly skin lesion clinic, during which she works alongside a number of our clinicians reviewing up to 36 patients with uncertain skin lesions to clarify diagnosis and advice regarding management. Feedback has been very positive from both patients and also clinicians, who found the session very educational.
